Bee Simple Recipes and less toxic recipes to help in your home and garden.... and save you money on costly products! Many of these recipes come from a highly recommended book Robin Stewart's Chemical Free Home which in my opinion should be in every home in the world.

Brass, bronze, pewter and stainless steel

Make a paste by mixing 1 tbs of salt, flour and vinegar. Use a damp cloth and apply paste to object, rubbing gently. Leave for 1 hour. Rinse with warm water and buff dry with a soft cloth.

    Drains (clear and disinfect)

All you need to do is throw a handful of salt followed but a jug of boiling water. For extra stubborn drains: Throw a handful of bicarb soda (or washing soda) and half a cup of vinegar down the drain. Let it sit for a half hour, with the plug in place. Then complete treatment with the handful of salt and jug of boiling water.
Please steer clear of commercial drain cleaners that contain caustic soda, a highly corrosive substance and toxic if swallowed.

    Microwave cleaner

Steam clean a microwave with a bowl filled with a sliced lemon in hot water. Run the microwave for five minutes and then towel off with a clean cloth

    Silver (tarnished)

Place silver in an old aluminium saucepan. Cover with water. Add 3 tsp of bicarb soda or washing soda. Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes (longer for heavily tarnished items). Remove silver, rinse in hot water, drain on a soft cloth. Polish each piece dry with a second cloth. An old toothbrush can be used to help remove tarnish from crevices.
